It’s another new year, and we have another new dispensary in Florida – Sunburn Cannabis, after they bought Medmen’s license to operate in the state.
I won’t go into too much detail about Sunburn’s story here in this review, but in short, it’s the latest venture from Brady Cobb, former CEO of 3 Boys farm and One Plant – which went on to become Sunnyside. There’s an article with ore about the story of Sunburn here, if you are interested.
Sunburn has got a few things going for it that set it apart from the current industry. One of those (and my personal favorite) is that they are the only dispensary in Florida offering flower to purchase in gram units, at $15/gram. I am a huge fan of this, and think it should be an industry standard for every dispensary. Some of us simply use less to medicate and would prefer trying new stains in smaller quantities. This obviously also helps me try and review more strains for all of you.
The other thing is that Sunburn Cannabis is not trying to be a medical cannabis brand, and that is evident when you step foot inside one of their dispensaries. Rather than the plain, sterilized “doctor’s office” environment of most dispensaries, there are sofas, pool tables, and eye-catching aesthetic decor all over the place. I have to say that my local Sunburn is my favorite dispensary environment at this time.
Chem De La Wilson seems to be a newer strain, perhaps even an in-house strain grown at Sunburn by PBud, a grower famous for being one of the original growers of the legendary Chemdog strain.

Appearance/Cure

This gram of Chem De La Wilson has a nearly identical cure to the Dulce De Uva that I reviewed earlier today. It is nearly perfect, with a dense, sticky bud that has near perfect moisture content, and breaks down into that spongy, fluffy consistency that a lot of us love.
As far as the strain’s appearance, it’s far enough away from the Chemdog and Chem D that it doesn’t even appear to be in the same family. The inside of the bud also had some flecks of purple in it, which you cannot see in the images above.
Whatever the grow and cure team are doing to these grams (particularly the Chem De La Wilson and the Dulce De Uva), they need to keep it up and keep improving on it. If they do, Sunburn could have a shot at having the best flower in the state.
Appearance/Cure Rating: 9.00/10.00
Smell/Taste
Upon opening the bag, Chem De La Wilson has a faint to moderate smell of earthiness, pine, and a faint hint of hash and gas. The smell isn’t all that strong, but it is certainly there and easy to detect.
Breaking open the buds gives us some of that rubbery chemical funk we know from the Chemdog lineage, with a bit of a sour twist. There’s also an ammonia smell there in this strain, and I noticed it in Sunburn’s current batch of Chem D too. (Interestingly, it was not there with Sunnyside’s Chem D that I reviewed last year, which was the last batch PBud grew for them before transferring to Sunburn.)
When smoking Chem De La Wilson, I taste the earthy pine on the inhale, with a musky gas taste on the exhale.
This is a pretty nice strain, but if you are someone who prioritizes flower that just absolutely reeks or smells strongly of candy, etc., this may not be the best choice for you.
Smell/Taste Rating: 6.00/10.00
Effects/Medical Use
Chem De La Wilson is listed as a hybrid strain, and I would say that is fair – possibly a sativa-dominant hybrid. I find the effects to be predominantly cerebral and focused. Sunburn’s graphic at the top of the review says the effects induce creativity as well; I haven’t noticed that, but everyone is different, and my experience can be different from batch to batch of the same strain as well.
Some patients on Reddit say that this strain caused borderline psychedelic, potentially anxiety-inducing effects for them. I did not have that experience, but I have not had a high dose of this strain, and I can see where it could cause those negative side effects in high doses. If you are particularly sensitive to these types of effects, that is something to keep in mind.
This is definitely an “other side of the coin” strain compared to the sedating and relaxing Chem D; that much I can say for sure. I find it best used as a sativa strain, preferably used from early morning to mid-afternoon.
Effects Rating: 7.40/10.00
“Possibly good for treating” section discontinuation
Effective beginning today, I will not be including this section moving forward. As I have always said, I am definitely no medical doctor – and everyone is so different – the same condition’s presentation can vary from person to person, etc. People may be looking for different things, and even my experience from the same strain at different times or different batches can vary.
I say all this to say that my reviews, while intended to be a helpful reference, should never replace a conversation/consultation with your cannabis physician when considering medical use. I feel that this section is also less relevant as Florida is beginning to transition to an Adult-Use Cannabis state, with more dispensaries taking on that feel/vibe, and an adult use vote potentially being on the ballot next year in the 2024 election.
Overall Rating: 7.46/10.00
Overall, I would best describe Chem De La Wilson as a “very good” hybrid strain from Sunburn.
My first impression of Sunburn Cannabis and their flower is a very positive one. I will definitely be including them in my rotation moving forward. As it stands, I think they have come in firmly within the Top 5, maybe even the Top 3 for best flower quality available in the West Panhandle, where we are still missing a lot of the dispensary options that South and Central Florida enjoy.
If you have a Sunburn Cannabis dispensary nearby, I say it’s worth checking out! I will certainly be back.
More Sunburn flower reviews are coming very soon – I’ve got Chem D and Grape Cream Cake coming down the pipeline next.
