Trulieve x Alien Labs TruFlower Review: Kryptochronic (Hybrid)

Trulieve recently dropped the first two strains of flower to come from their partnership with Alien Labs: Xeno and Kryptochronic.

Disclaimer: If you’re coming here from the Florida Medical Trees subreddit, there is an elephant in the room with this drop that I’ll go ahead and get out of the way: The discussion around this flower on that subreddit has been a bit contentious due to the price tag, which is the most expensive I’ve ever seen in Florida at a whopping $65/eighth. The disagreement with this price tag is understandable (I’m one of those who disagrees with it myself – we will get into that later). The problem is that some who feel very passionately about this subject, have resorted to personally attacking other patients who have the disposable income and have opted to purchase the Alien Labs flower despite the high price tag.

My opinion is that we should draw the line there. I am a strong advocate for speaking up against bad business practices, unethical and immoral acts, etc – but when we are talking about business practices, the discussion should focus on the entity itself and not patients who partake in it. I realize we can argue the semantics of how compliance is encouraging the practice in question, etc. – but that is my personal stance – let’s not attack fellow patients; save it for the corporations.

With that out of the way, this review will focus on the flower itself. I will speak my thoughts on the quality vs. price at the end of the review, but I don’t want that to be a distraction from objectively looking at the product itself.

For those who don’t know, Alien Labs is a California-based cannabis company that has been around for many years now, and has been one to research and develop many “exotic” strains. More of those will be coming to Florida in the coming weeks and months, according to their social media reps and Trulieve. We’re also told that Alien Labs trained the growers who eventually moved to Florida to grow their flower here; this way the Alien Labs brand is consistent across the country.

I’ve managed to get an eighth of Kryptochronic a few days ago once it was released for online ordering. I haven’t gotten Xeno yet, but I do have an order placed for an eighth – we will see if it goes through, and if so, I will review it as well.

Lab Report

Appearance/Cure

Without a doubt, this flower is different than what I’ve gotten at Trulieve for the past 4 years, going back to the ceramic flower cup days. You can tell that it has been grown differently – it’s a little bit hard to describe, but over the years, each MMTC’s flower has a consistent “feel” and look to it during a given time period, regardless of the strain. I’ve found that to be true for every one of them. Yet this eighth of Kryptochronic differs dramatically from all the other flower I’ve recently gotten at Trulieve.

The trichome heads are large and are easily visible to the naked eye without having to shine a flashlight on the flower. My eighth consisted of one large 2-gram nug and several smaller buds, as you can see in the image above.

The moisture content is perfect, and the flower is some of the stickiest I’ve gotten in Florida. The first time I was breaking down one of the smaller nugs to put in the grinder, it stuck to my finger and had to be peeled off – which is something I haven’t really seen a lot of in our program.

This is among, if not the best flower I’ve gotten from Trulieve. I don’t have access to The Flowery/Preferred Gardens/710 or Jungle Boys as I live in the west Panhandle, but I can say that some flower I’ve gotten from GrowHealthy in the past has come close to this level of quality – but maybe not quite as good.

It’s certainly among the best flower I’ve gotten in Florida’s market, but whether or not it’s worth $65/eighth is another question.

Appearance/Cure Rating: 9.50/10.00

Smell/Taste

My first impression of Kryptochronic is that it smells like Fruity Pebbles cereal, cream, and gas. I’ve never had any of the parent strains, but I am guessing it took strongly after the Fruity Pebbles OG smell. I also remember thinking that this flower smells different than most other strains I’ve tried. The smell in the jar is not particularly loud, but it is nuanced and somewhat complex.

When the flower is broken down or ground up, the above smells come through even stronger, with a sour/tart smell and hints of sweetness and pepper coming through as well. In some ways it reminds me of MAC 1, which I attribute to the shared Alien Cookies parent in the lineage.

The taste when smoked is sweet and fruity, with musky, vanilla, cookies, pepper, and earthy notes all coming through on the exhale. Of all the strains I have tried, this Kryptochronic has one of the more “full” flavor profiles.

Smell/Taste Rating: 7.50/10.00

Effects/Medical Use

Kryptochronic has a nice feeling of what I like to call the classic cannabis effects – warm and cozy euphoria, happiness, sometimes hunger – and in higher doses, a bit of a couch lock and sleepiness factor.

The effects come on strong and quickly after smoking with a warm cerebral rush and cozy euphoria. This stays consistent throughout the duration of the effects. I find it easier to “get in the zone” and be in the moment with whatever I’m doing. I wouldn’t say it is a full on racy feeling like some strains can produce, but instead is more paced and wholesome.

As time goes on, the effects tip toward what we call “indica”: a bit lazy, hungry, heavily relaxed, maybe even slightly sleepy.

I do enjoy the effects of Kryptochronic a lot, but I ask myself if it is anything drastically different from other strains that I can enjoy at a lower price – and the answer is “not really”.

Possibly good for treating:

  • Anxiety
  • Moderate aches and pains
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Moderate nausea/gastrointestinal issues
  • General Relaxation
  • Depression

I’m definitely no medical doctor, so please take the preceding conditions only as my own personal observations from using this strain and having experience with a multitude of different cannabis strains. Everybody is different, and every body reacts differently to various medications.

Effects Rating: 7.00/10.00

Overall Rating: 8.00/10.00

Overall, I would best describe Kryptochronic as a “very good” hybrid strain from Trulieve and Alien Labs.

So with all that being said – I have to say that I do not feel this flower is worth the $65. Do I regret getting it? Absolutely not. It’s good and it is different from a lot of other options, especially since I can’t order from The Flowery or Jungle Boys.

Truthfully, I feel this is what the $50 flower should be, if we’re going to have “premium” options. I understand that more attention and time/labor was given to the product; it shows in the final result. But considering that I have comparable options in my cabinet right now that I paid less than half of $65 for, it’s hard to think of this as anything other than a “every once in a while” situation if I have any extra disposable income. Unfortunately for many Floridians, that is not often or ever a reality.

Despite my ramblings, this is good flower. If you have the funds and you want to try it, do it. If you will never pay more than $50 eighth and will never try this, I completely understand that as well.

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year to all of you from FLMCC! I have really enjoyed writing these reviews and posts for the past 4 years, and I look forward to another great year with all of you in 2023.

  2. Spot on review. It matches my own experience, perfectly. I have had the parent strains on this one, and they pheno-selected well here for a terp profile which brings the best of the parents…gassy and sweet. Xeno likewise does its parents justice, with an almost pepperminty, kush mintz forward profile and zkittlez candy sweetness on the exhale. Both could easily find their way into my rotation at $50, maybe even $55, but not at what they’re charging.

It’s informing that this was going to be a “Store-only limited release” with only a single batch per strain (Flamingo Kush had like 3-4 batches drop the first day), yet both strains were still in stock and on the website late the next day in multiple of the locations in my town that got the drop. I don’t think sales are going to end up being what they projected on this one.

  3. Agreed! Very nice and chances are the best flower you will smoke in FL but as noted not worth the highest price for this flower in the state! Get it once to try and keep it as a SPECIAL treat TOP SHELF. Waiting for Area 41 from this brand! That is also a REALLY good strain.
