Sunnyside Flower Review: Sourband (Sativa)

Sourband, also known as Sour Headband, is a cross of two very well-known sativa strains that you might have already guessed from the strain name: Sour Diesel and Headband. I haven’t seen a whole lot of talk about this strain on Florida Medical Cannabis social media, but definitely wanted to give it a shot for the lineage, if nothing else.

Though I haven’t tried Headband flower before, I have tried Sour Diesel from a couple of different Florida dispensaries, and have always been a fan of that strain. What I have found is that Sourband takes strongly after the Sour Diesel parent in all the categories that I include in each review.

Quick Facts:

Sourband

Price at time of review: $50/eighth

Lineage: Sour Diesel x Headband

Harvest Number: 4226 2019 0156 3170

Lab Report

Appearance/Cure

This eighth of Sourband appears to have been grown and cured nicely. The nugs are all thick and dense, which is noteworthy considering this strain has sativa genetics.

The moisture content is good as well, as this flower isn’t dry by any means. It isn’t the stickiest flower, but it is dense and it breaks down well.

Whoever trimmed this batch did an excellent job; I found zero sugar leaves/larf in my eighth. The grow and harvest also appear to have been on point, as the trichomes are a mix of cloudy white and amber.

Overall, this is an excellently-grown eighth of flower from Sunnyside.

Appearance/Cure Rating: 8.00/10.00

Smell/Taste

The smell and taste are where Sourband really takes after its Sour Diesel parent. Opening the jar immediately yields sour citrus and hashy smells, with a hint of diesel fuel in the background. It reminds me a lot of Trulieve’s Sour Diesel flower that I got out of the flower cups in the early days of the program.

Breaking open or grinding Sourband yields a strong and tart sweet/sour mesh of fruity citrus, with the hashy diesel coming in quite a bit stronger, but still in the background. The fruity smell is more prominent than I ever remember Sour Diesel to be; there’s almost even a berry-like smell somewhere in there when it’s ground up.

The taste when smoked does not carry over the fruity elements as much. I initially taste a smoky, earthy gas flavor on the inhale, with a subtle sweet earthiness on the exhale.

While slightly different, Sourband is very similar to its Sour Diesel parent in its smell and taste – if you enjoy the smell and taste of Sour Diesel, it’s a pretty safe bet you will enjoy the same with Sourband.

Smell/Taste Rating: 7.20/10.00

Effects/Medical Use

If you’ve tried Sour Diesel and had similar experiences to mine, the strain probably stands out as one of the most energetic, racy sativa strains you’ve had. It’s often compared as the cannabis equivalent of a cup of coffee, and I found that to be true.

Sourband is still an energetic sativa, but I did not find it quite as speedy as its Sour Diesel parent.

Make no mistake: Sourband still comes on strong, and immediately yields a head change/perception shift. If you’re looking to change your mindset and think differently, this is an excellent choice. I find it to be a great daytime strain, and use it to be productive on weekend days.

Where Sourband differs from Sour Diesel’s effects, in my experience, is that it leans a little more hazy, lazy, or “hybrid” in effects, especially during the comedown. It hasn’t quite been to the point of having any negative effect on my productivity, but it definitely makes it feel nice to sit down when the task list is complete. With that being said, it is still strong “sativa” in its effects, and I think it is best suited for use in the morning and early afternoon.

Possibly good for treating:

  • Depression and related anxiety
  • Change in perception/mindset
  • Lack of motivation
  • Improves concentration and memory recall
  • Increases energy/alertness
  • Light relaxation

I’m definitely no medical doctor, so please take the preceding conditions only as my own personal observations from using this strain and having experience with a multitude of different cannabis strains. Everybody is different, and every body reacts differently to various medications.

Effects Rating: 7.40/10.00

Overall Rating: 7.53/10.00

Overall, I would best describe Sourband as a “very good” sativa strain from Sunnyside.

Of the 5 strains I’ve tried from Sunnyside so far, Sourband has been my favorite daytime strain.

For those of you who like Sour Diesel, it’s my opinion that Sourband is worth a shot. It’s a very similar strain overall, but leaned a bit more hybrid for me. Of course, everyone is different, and your mileage may vary.
