Trulieve launched their “Cultivar Collection” premium flower line back in October 2020. At the increased cost of $58/eighth, Trulieve attests that patients can expect overall higher quality flower: a better grow, a better cure, a better smell, taste, and effects.
This is what their press release in late 2020 stated:
The Cultivar Collection represents an intimate elevation of the cannabis we grow. Over the past few years, we have created and designed specialized new facilities that would allow us to have a more nuanced and hands on approach when it comes to our high-quality TruFlower. After intensive pheno hunting, our Master Growers chose select cultivars from our extensive genetic catalogue.
Our cultivators have devoted more personal, hands on care for each individual plant. At every point in the lifecycle there is an essential and direct human element ensuring the Cultivar Collection meets and e)xceeds the highest possible standards. All of the premium strains in The Cultivar Collection are a mix of hand and light machine trimming, all designed to showcase the natural structure, personality, and specially curated elements of the flower.Trulieve
I’ve tried a few other Cultivar Collection strains so far: Grape Cake, Sunset Sherbert x Kush Mints, PCB x Animal Cookies, Ghost Train Haze, and Hippie Crasher.
Considering that I had already tried VidaCann’s version of the Gelato 33 parent of this strain – and really enjoyed it – I decided that I would give Gelato Sundae a shot. (I haven’t had the Sundae Driver parent yet.)
Price at time of review: $58/eighth
Lineage: Gelato 33 x Sundae Driver
Batch/Harvest Number: 32195_0000569652
Gelato Sundae is a visually appealing strain that seems to take visual elements form both of its parent strains, displaying the various purple hues of Gelato 33, and the velvety green of Sundae Driver.
The grow and cure seem to have been done pretty well. The buds are fairly sticky, and sufficiently dense, though a few of the larger ones were a little more fluffy in their texture.
Trichomes look like they are mostly clear/white with a few starting the transition to amber and gold, indicating that the plant may have been harvested a bit early. For a strain that is being charged at a premium, this should not be the case.
The flower overall is solid, and would be an excellent grab in the $40 range. For $58, I expect to see the extra care that was advertised; that is the one major factor that holds this flower back from an even higher score in this category, as it checks all of the other boxes.
Appearance/Cure Rating: 7.00/10.00
I much enjoyed the smell and taste of the Gelato 33 parent when I tried it from VidaCann. I’ve found that for me, the more I enjoy the taste and smell of a strain, the better the effects seem to be. This may be psychological, or it may be my body’s way of identifying which strains have the best makeup.
Gelato Sundae is a really nice smelling and tasting strain, with a moderately strong aroma out of the jar. It did end up smelling very similar to the Gelato 33 parent, with smells of cake, cash, and hints of garlic and citrus apparent when first smelling the flower. There’s also something about the initial smell that vaguely reminds me of Trulieve’s Sherbert, which makes sense given that Sunset Sherbert (different name for the same strain) is listed as a parent of Gelato 33, making it a “grandparent” to Gelato Sundae.
Gelato Sundae shares yet another characteristic of its Gelato 33 parent: it has a much stronger, pungent smell when broken apart and/or ground up. A sweet and garlicky fuel smell becomes dominant, with a nutty sort of smell coming in the background. The notes of cake and citrus are somewhat overpowered by this, but still remain noticeable.
When smoked, I first taste sweet cake on the inhale, followed by earthy and herbal notes on the exhale. It also seems to leave a bit of a sweet taste on the tongue for a minute or two afterward.
Smell/Taste Rating: 8.50/10.00
Gelato Sundae is a pretty well-balanced hybrid that seems to tip slightly to the “indica” side of the effects spectrum, with lazy effects creeping in as time goes by.
A mild to moderate cerebral rush is the first thing I feel after medicating with this strain, almost immediately followed by a bit of a warm body buzz. As time passes, the cerebral effects fade into a somewhat cloudy euphoria, all while the body effects intensify in their relaxation aspect.
I don’t get much of a “sedative” feeling from this strain, but it can make me lazy/drowsy in moderate to high doses.
Generally, I would say Gelato Sundae is best reserved for afternoons, evenings, and relaxing days when the patient doesn’t have a strict schedule or a task list to work through. The relaxation and euphoria of this strain are notable amongst the dozens of hybrids that I have tried over the past 3 years.
Possibly good for treating:
- Mild to Moderate aches and pains
- Minor nausea/gastrointestinal issues
- General Relaxation
I’m definitely no medical doctor, so please take the preceding conditions only as my own personal observations from using this strain and having experience with a multitude of different cannabis strains. Everybody is different, and every body reacts differently to various medications.
Effects Rating: 8.40/10.00
Overall Rating: 7.96/10.00
Overall, I would best describe Gelato Sundae as a “very good” hybrid strain from Trulieve.
I found this to be a notably enjoyable strain, and am happy to see Trulieve continue to greatly expand their genetic library of flower.
