Trulieve TruFlower Review: Florida Sunrise (Hybrid)

Trulieve has been releasing a slew of new strains throughout late 2020 and into 2021. Florida Sunrise is another one of those strains, and I have to admit that the name of the strain piqued my interest. After reading a couple of positive reviews online, I decided to give it a shot.

Google Searches will reveal Florida Sunrise is a Jungle Boys cultivar that crosses Green Crack with TK Bx1, but this is not the cultivar that Trulieve grows. Instead, the strain I’m reviewing today is a cross of Orange Kush and GSC.

Quick Facts:

Florida Sunrise

Price at time of review: $53/eighth

Lineage: Orange Kush x GSC

Batch/Harvest Number: 29714_0000355768

Appearance/Cure

Trulieve’s flower has been somewhat “hit or miss” in 2021, but this eighth of Florida Sunrise is definitely one of the better batches I’ve recently picked up.

Not only are the buds covered in trichomes – they are covered in mostly mature trichomes with a gold/amber color. Some of the darker colors from the GSC lineage are apparent as seen in the images above.

The buds are very dense and have a mostly good moisture content (slightly dry), but aren’t particularly sticky. It breaks down dry as well.

Regardless of the mild shortcomings in the moisture and stickiness, this is a good looking eighth.

Appearance/Cure Rating: 7.30/10.00

Smell/Taste

As we’ve noted a couple of times already, Florida Sunrise is a cross of Orange Kush and GSC. I say this again because both parents come through in the smell. The smell is pretty mild in the jar; it is predominantly peppery, with hints of orange.

When broken apart, the orange really comes through strong, in the form of an orange cream soda or orange ice cream smell, with the pepper notes still just as detectable. This was my favorite part of the strain in this category.

When smoked, the taste is 90% spicy, earthy, and peppery – with a slight hint of musky orange on the exhale.

This isn’t an extremely pungent or “loud” strain, but Florida Sunrise is a lot like its namesake: smooth, mellow, with a good bit of orange in the mix.

Smell/Taste Rating: 6.50/10.00

Effects/Medical Use

Florida Sunrise is one of the heavier hybrid strains I’ve tried, with effects that clearly lean “indica”, or more to the relaxing and borderline sedating end of the spectrum.

A lot of indica-dominant hybrid strains take a while before the body effects start creeping in – usually averaging around 20-25 minutes for me.

This isn’t the case with Florida Sunrise. As soon as 5 minutes after the first hit, I feel the warm and heavy sensations begin to set in to my arms and legs, eventually connecting throughout the whole body.

There is a cerebral/psychedelic component to this strain, but it is not as noticeable to me as the heavy body effects are. Another strain that comes to mind with these type of effects is Trulieve’s Gorilla Grapes.

Florida Sunrise seems like a strain best reserved for afternoon to evening use.

Possibly good for treating:

  • Mild depression
  • Anxiety
  • Minor to moderate aches and pains
  • Insomnia (in higher doses)
  • General Relaxation
  • Headaches
  • Lack of appetite (appetite stimulant)
  • Gastrointestinal discomfort (Irritable Bowel Syndrome or other similar conditions)

I’m definitely no medical doctor, so please take the preceding conditions only as my own personal observations from using this strain and having experience with a multitude of different cannabis strains. Everybody is different, and every body reacts differently to various medications.

Effects Rating: 7.10/10.00

Overall Rating: 6.96/10.00

Overall, I would best describe Florida Sunrise as a “good” hybrid strain from Trulieve.

I’ve found that I typically like GSC crosses – while ironically, I have not found a batch of GSC that I love, yet. Florida Sunrise was another example of a GSC cross, perhaps one of the heavier ones I’ve found.

After a bit of a lull in new reviews, I have several more coming out in the next couple of weeks. Thanks so much for your continued support of FLMCC!

  1. It’s supposed to be a sativa dominant hybrid. But the growers at Trulieve didn’t harvest it until April 13th…. 2 weeks after the full moon! That’s why it’s sleepy. If their master grower has no idea what the hell he is doing!
