Trulieve “Cultivar Collection” Flower Review: Ghost Train Haze (Sativa)

Trulieve launched their “Cultivar Collection” premium flower line back in October 2020. At the increased cost of $58/eighth, Trulieve attests that patients can expect overall higher quality flower: a better grow, a better cure, a better smell, taste, and effects.

This is what their press release in late 2020 stated:

The Cultivar Collection represents an intimate elevation of the cannabis we grow. Over the past few years, we have created and designed specialized new facilities that would allow us to have a more nuanced and hands on approach when it comes to our high-quality TruFlower. After intensive pheno hunting, our Master Growers chose select cultivars from our extensive genetic catalogue.

Our cultivators have devoted more personal, hands on care for each individual plant. At every point in the lifecycle there is an essential and direct human element ensuring the Cultivar Collection meets and e)xceeds the highest possible standards. All of the premium strains in The Cultivar Collection are a mix of hand and light machine trimming, all designed to showcase the natural structure, personality, and specially curated elements of the flower.

I’ve tried a few other Cultivar Collection strains so far: Grape Cake, Sunset Sherbert x Kush Mints, and PCB x Animal Cookies. Ghost Train Haze is the first sativa strain I’ve seen in the Cultivar Collection, so I was interested to see how it stacked up to the others.

Lab Report

Appearance/Cure

I was pleasantly surprised when I opened my eighth of Ghost Train Haze, and found the large bud pictured above looking back at me. This is some particularly impressive looking flower, with both density and a “free flowing” appearance in the pistils.

Trichome coverage is abundant, and the color appears to be in between “cloudy” and the amber/gold color in some spaces, while appearing to be more dusty gold in others.

Bud density and moisture content is nearly a bullseye. This is also notably sticky flower, but not the stickiest I’ve had.

Trulieve did a great job with this first batch of Ghost Train Haze, and I hope that future batches are just as good or better!

Appearance/Cure Rating: 8.30/10.00

Smell/Taste

Ghost Train Haze is high in Limonene, and also has an appreciable Terpinolene content as well. Like many other strains with the terpene combination (including GrowHealthy’s Brick House, of which this is a parent strain), Ghost Train Haze has a strong, pungent “lemony pine floor cleaner” type of smell. However, with the significantly higher ratio of Limonene compared to other terpenes, this is a sweeter presentation of this common cannabis smell. It reminds me of another strain I’ve tried and reviewed recently: VidaCann’s Margalope.

When ground up, the tangy, almost-chemical lemon smell becomes even more pungent and prominent.

When smoked, I mostly taste pine and spice on both the inhale and exhale – the lemon notes remain largely absent in the taste.

Smell/Taste Rating: 7.90/10.00

Effects/Medical Use

I found Ghost Train Haze to be a potent cerebral strain, though it often left me feeling foggy and aloof – as the “Haze” in the name might imply.

If you are looking for a motivating or focused sativa, this isn’t your pick. I find this strain to be much more appropriate for leisurely activities: a walk, a bike ride, a day on the beach, etc.

In fact, Ghost Train Haze felt much more “hybrid” than “sativa” with its effects, for me at least. It did help peel my depression away, though it didn’t have any notable impact on my anxiety. I also find it to be good for mildly relaxing body effects.

In general, I’d recommend this strain for use at almost any time of the day, with the possible exception of late night.

Possibly good for treating:

  • Depression
  • Lack of appetite
  • Minor headaches
  • Relief of minor skeletal/muscular aches and pains
  • Good for general enjoyment of life/activities
  • Good for “stepping out of the box” with mental outlook

I’m definitely no medical doctor, so please take the preceding conditions only as my own personal observations from using this strain and having experience with a multitude of different cannabis strains. Everybody is different, and every body reacts differently to various medications.

Effects Rating: 6.90/10.00

Overall Rating: 7.70/10.00

Overall, I would best describe Ghost Train Haze as a “very good” sativa strain from Trulieve.

I found this to be an enjoyable strain, and am happy to see Trulieve continue to greatly expand their genetic library of flower.
