Trulieve TruFlower Review: Panhandle Purps (Indica)

I remember in the early days of this site – late 2018 and early 2019 – when I could keep up with every single new strain that came out in Northwest Florida. We would only see a new strain drop (usually from Trulieve at that time) every few months or so.

In 2021, after much evolution in the industry, I am unable to keep up with all the new strains from any single dispensary – let alone the entire industry of Northwest Florida. This is a great development for patients (and maybe less so for the comprehensive nature of my flower reviews.)

Panhandle Purps is yet another new (2021) strain from Trulieve, and there doesn’t appear to be much information about this strain online, other than around half a dozen post about it on the Florida Medical Trees subreddit. What I’ve seen from there is almost all positive.

This strain reminds me a lot of another strain I’ve tried before, and a strain that happens to be in the lineage of Panhandle Purps: Bubba Kush.

Appearance/Cure

Trulieve seems to be putting out some really good batches of flower in early 2021, and this eighth of Panhandle Purps is no exception. As seen in the images above, there is abundant trichome coverage, and the color of the trichomes looks good – a blend of gold and amber.

Some of the other images on social media showed eighths that ironically had no purple color in a strain named for it, but my eighth is predominantly purple, especially when ground up.

The one issue with this eighth is the ever-so-slight amount of dryness; while it is almost barely enough to mention, I felt like the recent batch of Pink Cookies that I got was nearly perfect, and the Panhandle Purps isn’t quite that good in the cure. Overall, however, this is a really nice batch of flower.

Appearance/Cure Rating: 8.30/10.00

Smell/Taste

Panhandle Purps reminds me of a slightly more spicy/peppery version of GrowHealthy’s Bubba Kush in its smell and taste. The smell is not especially potent right out of the jar – it’s moderate – but it is complex.

Upon opening the jar, I can detect smells of sweet hash, peppery/spicy cookies, coffee, and a hint of berry in the background.

When broken apart or ground up, the smell gets slightly more pungent. I notice a skunky/funky smell of coffee and some sort of nut, with equal presence of a sweet and fruity berry scent.

The taste when smoked is of pungent and skunky coffee on the inhale, with a sweet berry hash on the exhale. I’d say the taste of Panhandle Purps is more notable than the smell.

Smell/Taste Rating: 6.90/10.00

Effects/Medical Use

In my nearly 3 years of being a member of Florida’s medical marijuana registry, I’ve sampled dozens of strains of flower. One thing I’ve found is that by and large, the effects of flower tend to be very similar from strain to strain. You can pick any two strains and compare them; there will be a decent likelihood that the differences in the effects will be nuanced. Maybe one strain is just a bit more relaxing, or maybe another is just slightly better for motivation than the next. Sometimes this can make it difficult to avoid sounding monotonous when I write the Effects section on these reviews – I find myself having to be creative, and really pay attention to every detail of how the flower makes me feel in those instances.

However, every once in a while, I find a standout strain. These strains often match the stereotypical descriptions of sativa, hybrid, or indica effects. They are defined in how they feel, and really easy to describe. They work almost exactly as described and/or intended.

Panhandle Purps is one of those strains, in that it is a very defined “indica” flower, with notably heavy and relaxing effects. It is consistently sedating for me in higher doses, and it brings on all the classic “indica effects” of a heavy body sensation, increased appetite, increased relaxation, reduced anxiety, and sleepiness if I consume enough. For this reason, Panhandle Purps (again) reminds me quite a bit of the Bubba Kush in its lineage – though perhaps an even heavier version of it.

This seems like a good strain for pain management, insomnia, GI issues – you name it. It feels heavy, and it feels medicinal. Perhaps obviously, I would recommend this strain primarily for evening use, or at least during times when you don’t have to be productive or deal with a large task list.

Possibly good for treating:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • PTSD & related sleep issues
  • Moderate aches and pains
  • Moderate nausea/gastrointestinal issues
  • Heavy Relaxation
  • Appetite stimulation
  • Insomnia

I’m definitely no medical doctor, so please take the preceding conditions only as my own personal observations from using this strain and having experience with a multitude of different cannabis strains. Everybody is different, and every body reacts differently to various medications.

Effects Rating: 9.00/10.00

Overall Rating: 8.06/10.00

Overall, I would best describe Panhandle Purps as an “excellent and noteworthy” indica strain from Trulieve.

Hopefully, Trulieve keeps this strain around, as I believe it has potential to be a patient favorite from them. I also welcome the expansion of Trulieve’s genetics, and will continue to purchase and review new strains for you here on FLMCC.net as they become available in my area.

2021 is looking to be another great year for the Florida medical cannabis industry, and I look forward to navigating another year together with all of you. Thanks so much for your continued support of FLMCC!
