Hello, and Happy New Year 2021 from FLMCC! This is our first review of the year, and we’re revisiting another phenotype of one of my favorite sativa strains from GrowHealthy: Jilly Bean.
GrowHealthy’s “Gilded Lemons” (formerly known as Jilly Bean 8) is a strain from MzJill Genetics that crosses a female Orange Velvet plant with a male Space Queen plant, for a candy-citrus sativa that is said to have both strong uplifting, and pain-relieving effects.
The strain has received overwhelmingly positive reviews in Florida, where it is grown by GrowHealthy. What may come as a surprise to some patients is that there are actually multiple phenotypes of this strain circulating at GrowHealthy, as indicated by the number in the strain name. Have you gotten Jilly Bean on different occasions and noticed a significantly different smell, or even different effects from batch to batch? Chances are likely that you got two different phenotypes each time. And though GrowHealthy’s website doesn’t tell you which phenotype you’re getting (yet), their Leafly page does. Note that the linked page is for the GrowHealthy Orlando location, but each location has a separate page that shows their specific live inventory.
With all that being said, I find that Gilded Lemons differs significantly from both Jilly Bean 3 and Jilly Bean 5 in its smell/taste, and is also noticeably different in its effects.

Appearance/Cure

While Jilly Bean phenotypes 3 and 5 had very similar physical characteristics and bud structure, I found Gilded Lemons to be quite different. The color is notably lighter, the nugs are less dense and more airy, and it doesn’t appear to be quite as resinous as its other phenotype counterparts that I’ve tried.
The flower is well-covered in a blanket of mature golden trichomes, and the trim job is good. However, this flower seems especially dry, to the point that I am adding an Integra humidity pack to help for the last two thirds of the eighth.
This isn’t bad flower by any means, but I’ve seen better from GrowHealthy. Perhaps Gilded Lemons is just a harder phenotype to grow, or this was an “off” batch for their grow team. Regardless, I believe I will stick to phenotype 5 (my favorite) and 3 (second favorite) in the future.
Appearance/Cure Rating: 6.40/10.00
Smell/Taste
Where I found Jilly Bean 3 to have a musky, fruity smell, and Jilly Bean 5 to have a tart, grapefruit smell, I unfortunately found Gilded Lemons to have a weak smell – slightly reminiscent of a lemon Starburst candy.
Terpene percentages don’t always tell the whole story of how a particular strain or batch of flower will smell, but it lined up with the lack of pungent smell in this instance, a great contrast from the other two Jilly Bean phenotypes that I’ve tried. Gilded Lemons smells similar to other terpinolene-dominant strains like Jack Herer and Space Bomb, but very mild and muted, at least in the batch that I currently have.
The taste when smoked is very spicy and peppery; again, this is not what I prefer, personally. Others may enjoy it, however.
If you’re reading this and have tried Gilded Lemons before (that phenotype specifically), drop a comment and let us know if you had a similar experience. I’m curious to see if this is a “bad” phenotype, or just a weaker grow.
Smell/Taste Rating: 4.70/10.00
Effects/Medical Use
This batch of Gilded Lemons redeems itself in the effects category. I found it to be a good mix of the effects I found from the more relaxed Jilly Bean 3, and the more speedy/racy Jilly Bean 5.
Gilded Lemons definitely has a “sativa” feel: very energetic, uplifting, happy, and slightly motivating. I find the effects to be very “even keel”, and perhaps among the more euphoric of the three phenotypes that I’ve tried so far. I found it to be a good strain for staying productive and in a slightly euphoric state, all grounded by a calm relaxation. I didn’t experience much anxiety with this strain.
As the effects wind down, a mild body relaxation takes over, and the effects gently fade as the hours pass. The “comedown” is not harsh or sedating as it can be with some strains; I can liken it to a cloud gently descending and fading when it reaches the ground, if that makes any sense – overall, very enjoyable effects.
Possibly good for treating:
- Depression
- Anxiety (in lower doses)
- Minor motivational issues
- Minor aches and pains
- Minor gastrointestinal issues
- General mild relaxation
I’m definitely no medical doctor, so please take the preceding conditions only as my own personal observations from using this strain and having experience with a multitude of different cannabis strains. Everybody is different, and every body reacts differently to various medications.
Effects Rating: 7.10/10.00
Overall Rating: 6.06/10.00
Overall, I would best describe Gilded Lemons as a “good” sativa strain from GrowHealthy.
While it wasn’t terrible flower, I will not get this phenotype of Jilly Bean again; I much prefer Jilly Bean 5 to this one, and Jilly Bean 3 was much better as well. Again, if you’ve had this specific phenotype (8), and you had a much different experience, drop a comment and let us know! I may revisit it if I just got an “unlucky” batch.

I just picked up Gilded Lemons from GrowHealthy today and it is still .5 terps, lack of smell and dry…I just put a boveda pack in before I read this review. I am getting white ash if that’s a good indicator it was flushed and cured properly. Little bummed out, effects are slowly creeping in now with some mental stimulation. I really dig your product reviews, great job.

Thanks for the compliment. Sorry to hear it’s still lackluster. Good luck finding strains that work for you!
