Trulieve “Cultivar Collection” Flower Review: Grape Cake (Hybrid)

Trulieve released their new “Cultivar Collection” on October 17, 2020, with 3 new strains available statewide at that time: Sunset Sherbet x Kush Mints, Grape Cake, and Rae Bae.

Trulieve offered the following statement about Cultivar Collection in a press release:

The Cultivar Collection represents an intimate elevation of the cannabis we grow. Over the past few years, we have created and designed specialized new facilities that would allow us to have a more nuanced and hands on approach when it comes to our high-quality TruFlower. After intensive pheno hunting, our Master Growers chose select cultivars from our extensive genetic catalogue.

Our cultivators have devoted more personal, hands on care for each individual plant. At every point in the lifecycle there is an essential and direct human element ensuring the Cultivar Collection meets and e)xceeds the highest possible standards. All of the premium strains in The Cultivar Collection are a mix of hand and light machine trimming, all designed to showcase the natural structure, personality, and specially curated elements of the flower.

Grape Cake was not available at my location in the first couple of releases; luckily, however, I caught it when it came through this time. The batch I got is absolutely beautiful, and I’ve been looking forward to reviewing it.

Appearance/Cure

With the genetics it has, it’s no surprise that Grape Cake is as beautiful as it is – and Trulieve has grown it to near-perfection.

Each bud is full of color: medium and dark greens, medium purple, and a purple hue so dark that it almost looks black. Because of the relatively dark colors of Grape Cake, the contrasting golden trichomes really stand out – and they abundantly cover the flower. Cracking open the buds reveals even more crystals. This is one of the prettiest strains I’ve come across in some time.

The cure and moisture content are close to perfect, with that “not too dry, not too sticky” consistency that is easy to work with. The bud breaks down to that “fluffy” consistency that I always talk about, which usually coincides with well-grown flower in my experience.

Trulieve is doing an excellent drop growing these Cultivar Collection strains, and I’m really impressed with this entry in the series.

Appearance/Cure Rating: 9.05/10.00

Smell/Taste

The first word that comes to my mind when opening the jar is “sweet”.

In reality, the aroma of Grape Cake is more complex. There is a musky and sour underlying smell that is perhaps most noticeable. With that are notes of pine, spice, hash, and yes, a subtle grape/berry aroma as well.

Like almost every Cake cross I’ve found, the taste outperforms the smell, in my experience. On the inhale (when smoked), I find there to be a musky and spicy taste. Once this settles, just before the exhale, it begins turning sweet (the word that came to my mind at this point was “rich.”) With the exhale, the sweet cake and spicy grape tastes come out, leaving a lingering sweetness on the tongue well afterward.

Grape Cake isn’t the most pungent strain in the world, but it tastes really good. Fans of sweet strains, and the Cake lineage in general should enjoy this strain. Of all the Cake strains I’ve tried up to this point, Grape Cake is my favorite in this category.

Smell/Taste Rating: 7.00/10.00

Effects/Medical Use

Grape Cake has really warm, cozy, relaxing effects. In some ways, it reminds me of another Trulieve “Grape” strain: Gorilla Grapes. If I had to put a label on it, I would say that Grape Cake is an indica-dominant hybrid.

There is a cerebral stimulation aspect to this strain, but it is not the speedy, racy, potentially paranoid variety for me. Instead, I find the mental space that Grape Cake invokes to be pleasant, euphoric, and warm – perfect for the holiday season.

This seems to be a good strain for relieving anxiety. Body effects are the dominant ones, and unlike some strains, they don’t take long to become apparent for me; and as my experiences with most strains go, these body relaxation effects become more intense with time.

While I don’t find Grape Cake to be sedating, it does create a certain mental “haziness” that may make certain tasks difficult. With that being said. I find this best used as an “after work” strain to unwind after a long day, all the way up to use right before bed.

Possibly good for treating:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Minor to moderate aches and pains
  • Insomnia (in higher doses)
  • Headaches
  • Gastrointestinal discomfort (Irritable Bowel Syndrome or other similar conditions)

I’m definitely no medical doctor, so please take the preceding conditions only as my own personal observations from using this strain and having experience with a multitude of different cannabis strains. Everybody is different, and every body reacts differently to various medications.

Effects Rating: 7.70/10.00

Overall Rating: 7.91/10.00

Overall, I would best describe Grape Cake as a “very good” hybrid strain from Trulieve.

My total impression of the “Cultivar Collection” so far is great – I will certainly be back to try other strains in this lineup in the future. The only strain I haven’t reviewing from this collection yet, is Rae Bae – so I will be on the lookout for it, and of course will review it here for you all once I’m able to grab an eighth.

I hope this review was useful to you all – stay tuned for all the latest strain reviews from Trulieve and other MMTCs!
