GrowHealthy “Master Grower Series” Flower Review: Rain Maker (Hybrid)

GrowHealthy introduced their “Master Grower Series” tier of flower at the end of 2019. The idea behind this is that their growers take that little bit of extra care in every step of growing this flower, in exchange for a $10 price increase for the consumer – these eighths are $60 instead of the usual $50 that GrowHealthy charges.

This leads to the unavoidable, cliche question that comes up when we talk about premium flower: is it worth it?

People get so passionate about the price tiers of flower, and I’ve seen so many people get angry at others for buying “premium” products – they say that this will cause all prices to go up.

However, what I’ve seen in the ~6 months of these premium options being available, is that they are just that: options. GrowHealthy offers really spectacular flower in their “Littles” for $35/eighth, and the only drawback (which isn’t even a drawback in the medicinal sense) is the bud size. My view is that as long as these dispensaries offer the more affordable options as often, or more often, then their premium options – why get mad at someone for exercising their freedom of choice? Sometimes, this type of “activism” can be counterproductive to our cause.

All this goes to say: I still had my $75 off $150+ discount, and I really liked everything I’ve gotten from GrowHealthy so far. I decided to pull the trigger and see what the hype is about.

To my knowledge, GrowHealthy currently has offered 2 strains in the “Master Grower Series”: this Rain Maker, and another strain called Bitter Sweetz.

Enough preface – let’s get into the review.

Appearance/Cure

One of the main selling points of the Master Grower Series, is that all of the strains within that collection are allowed to cure for a full 28 days.

I’d say this eighth of Rain Maker was allowed to grow, mature, and cure very well; what I’m not so sure of is that this flower is any better quality than their other eighths priced at $50. I feel like this is on a similar level to the Jilly Bean I recently picked up from GrowHealthy, and perhaps a bit dryer.

However, nothing can take away the fact that this is outstanding quality cannabis flower. It’s extremely frosty, as you can see from the images above. It retains that density of trichomes (or even more so) when the buds are broken apart. The trim is good. The flower is dense.

So again – amazing quality. But worth the extra $10 vs. their other flower? That’s debatable in this instance. I’d be more likely to “believe” $55 based on this eighth alone.

Appearance/Cure Rating: 9.20/10.00

Smell/Taste

Rain Maker has two distinct smells that make up the bulk of its aroma: citrus and cheese.

Both are equally prevalent, and both equally intensify when the bud is broken apart or ground up.

This strain reminds me of another I’ve tried: MUV’s Mandarin Dreams flower. As another Redditor pointed to me, this makes sense: Both Rain Maker and Mandarin Dreams have a common parent strain in Mandarin Sunset.

The taste when smoked is very similar to the smell, with an added spice on the exhale that seems to be common on strains with fruity terpene profiles.

I enjoy the smell and taste of this strain, and the 28-day cure seems to be noticeable in the more “full” aroma.

Smell/Taste Rating: 8.00/10.00

Effects/Medical Use

I find Rain Maker to be a sativa-leaning hybrid, but not drastically so: perhaps 55/45 sativa in effects.

The initial feelings I get are very strong, cerebral, and energizing. I feel it in my forehead and behind the eyes – somewhat intense, but not overwhelming.

The “sativa” effects are really dominant for the first 20 minutes or so. At that time, a very full body relaxation comes washing in, but not in a sedating manner. This is another strain I enjoyed using for leisurely activities like playing video games and watching movies. It isn’t bad for writing this review either, but perhaps a little more relaxing (and less motivating) than I would like.

Rain Maker seems best suited for use any time from the morning to the evening. It’s overall a well-balanced hybrid – just a bit sativa-leaning. Like the smell, the quality of the flower seems to come through in the effects feeling “full” – I don’t know how to describe what I’m talking about beyond that, but I know many of you will know what I’m talking about – sometimes products can feel like there’s “something missing”; however, really high-quality products will leave one feeling more relaxed and truly medicated/relieved of their ailments. This is one of those products.

Possibly good for treating:

  • Anxiety
  • Moderate aches and pains
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Moderate nausea/gastrointestinal issues
  • General Relaxation
  • Depression

I’m definitely no medical doctor, so please take the preceding conditions only as my own personal observations from using this strain and having experience with a multitude of different cannabis strains. Everybody is different, and every body reacts differently to various medications.

Effects Rating: 7.20/10.00

Overall Rating: 8.13/10.00

Overall, I would best describe Rain Maker as an “excellent” hybrid strain from GrowHealthy.

I felt that this flower was on par with the quality of the rest of the flower I’ve gotten from GrowHealthy. I do not feel there was anything in my medicating experience that warranted the extra $10 for the eighth, but perhaps this was an example of the “low end” of quality for the Master Grower Series.

Deciding whether something is “worth it” is totally subjective, so I am reserved in my judgment of this Rain Maker for that reason. I say to try out the Master Grower Series if you can afford to do so – if nothing else, just to see what the fuss is all about.

Be well, and stay healthy. I appreciate each one of you and all your support, and please know that all that positivity will come back to you.
