Durban Dawg is one of GrowHealthy’s newest strains as of the time of this review, and it intends to create an uplifting, clear-headed hybrid strain by combining the popular Durban Poison landrace strain with the newer Stardawg.
I found this strain to be an enjoyable sativa-dominant hybrid. It reminds me of Trulieve’s Space Bomb in several ways.

Appearance/Cure

While all the other eighths of “littles” that I’ve purchased have contained mostly decent, medium-sized buds, this eighth of Durban Dawg littles had the smallest buds I’ve ever seen in it – it was like hundreds of rat pellets, no joke.
The pellet-buds seemed to be cured well; they were really sticky, and covered in visible trichomes that look like they were allowed to properly mature.
The trim job on this eighth is one of the worst I’ve seen from GrowHealthy flower, but I understand it may be more difficult when working with tiny pieces of flower.
There’s nothing wrong with the overall quality; it’s just one of the weaker batches I’ve gotten from this MMTC. I hear that the full flower is spectacular, however.
Appearance/Cure Rating: 5.50/10.00
Smell/Taste
I’ve seen a colorful variety of adjectives used to describe the smell and taste of Durban Dawg: funky, skunky, loud, etc.
Maybe the batches of flower for this strain have a wider variability in regards to smell/taste, but I found that my Durban Dawg smells and tastes almost identical to Trulieve’s Space Bomb strain.
What I’m assuming is the terpineol seems to dominate the terpene profile, with spicy, woody, herbal, and “sharp” notes. It seems like the Stardawg may dominate the genetics, because the Durban Poison (“Atlas”) parent strain that I got from Fluent was extremely skunky and sour – like your stereotypical “loud” herb.
Durban Dawg, however, strikes me as having a more “bright”, “sharp” aroma. The taste when smoked is very similar to the smell, with added musk and spice on the exhale.
I know a lot of patients/cannabis consumers really enjoy strains that smell like this (often terpinolene or terpineol dominant), but they truthfully aren’t my favorite. Taste and smell are an extremely subjective category, so don’t take my rating for an absolute. My “9” might be your “3”, and vise-versa.
Durban Dawg has a nice smell and taste, but it doesn’t land as one of my favorite strains in this category.
Smell/Taste Rating: 6.00/10.00
Effects/Medical Use
Durban Dawg feels 100% like a sativa-dominant hybrid to me, with the effects being almost entirely cerebral. This is a good strain for creativity, and for the motivation to initiate creativity. I found that after just two hits of the flower I have, I instantly felt more “in tune” with writing this review, and more overall enjoyment from it.
Again with the Space Bomb theme – I find the effects of Durban Dawg to be very similar, though possibly more euphoric and relaxing. It seems like a good, versatile daytime strain for use any time from early morning to early evening. I think it would be a good choice for both work and leisure tasks.
I find other strains more useful for my individual needs, but Durban Dawg comes across as a high quality strain with mostly sativa effects. There may be a slight element of body relaxation, but I personally don’t feel much of it from this strain.
Possibly good for treating:
- Lack of energy/motivation
- Depression
- Relief of minor skeletal/muscular aches and pains
- Good for creativity
- Good for general relaxation/leisurely tasks
I’m definitely no medical doctor, so please take the preceding conditions only as my own personal observations from using this strain and having experience with a multitude of different cannabis strains. Everybody is different, and every body reacts differently to various medications.
Effects Rating: 6.70/10.00
Overall Rating: 6.06/10.00
Overall, I would best describe Durban Funk as a “good” hybrid strain from GrowHealthy.
I want to state this again: don’t take my reviews as absolutes. Everyone is different. What I do here is try to most accurately describe my experience with a product/strain. Most times, I hear from a lot of fellow patients who confirm that they had the same experiences. But I know there is always a group of people who feel different effects – it’s another example of the wonders of chemistry and biology.
That being said: always go with the decision that works best for you. I have a lot of experience with different strains, and writing about them, but I never claim to know it all. Don’t let this review, or any other review that anybody makes, stop you from trying a product that you truly want to try. It could be the best thing you’ve ever gotten for treating your condition(s).
I personally won’t purchase this strain again, but fortunately, GrowHealthy has many other options that I really enjoy. I’ve quickly come to realize that of all the MMTCs I’ve tried, they are currently the most consistent with producing the highest quality flower. I believe this has a lot to do with them letting their plants fully mature and cure, as I’ve noticed the trichomes on their flower are always fully-developed and gold to amber in color.
Keep it up, GrowHealthy! Your flower is amongst, if not, the best in Florida’s legal market right now – even if this Durban Dawg wasn’t my favorite.

While the Durbandawg seems good, I don’t understand the need or want to cross the 2 strains. Durban Poison is amazing on its own and nobody else sells it. The chemdawg cross ruins the smell, taste, and sadly the effects. Durban Poison is one my favorite sativas because of its effects and taste. It is one of the better sativas because you can smoke it all day long and stay motivated and happy without being forgetful or stupid high.
