GrowHealthy Flower Review: Silicon Valley OG (Indica)

Silicon Valley OG is one of two GrowHealthy indica strains that I have tried so far; the other strain was Bubba Kush (review here).

I have never heard of this strain until GrowHealthy offered it, and there is next to no information about the strain online. However, social media indications are that Florida medical cannabis patients seem to really enjoy this strain. In fact, I ran a poll over which of the 2 available indicas (SVOG and Bubba Kush have been the only indica strains I’ve seen so far), and everyone who responded seemed to have a hard time picking a favorite.

I do like this strain. For me, it is more of a cerebral indica than it is sedating. It’s been one of the few strains (indica at that!) to actually give me anxiety in high doses, even with my moderately high tolerance. (I view this as a challenge – in Strain Slayer‘s words, it’s just a tougher strain for me to slay!)

This is GrowHealthy’s description of the strain:

A cross between two Indica-leaning hybrids, Silicon Valley OG creates a mellow sensation without the hard-hitting sedation of some Indica strains. From Valley Girl comes cerebral effects that can include a perception of time slowing and increased creativity. Combined with the uplifting and stress-relieving effects of Stardawg; patients can use this strain to smash stress, elevate mood, and ease pain. A complex terpene profile includes floral aromas from Valley Girl and Stardawg’s earthy, piney, and diesel aromas.

Damn, you sparkly.

With this being my third batch of GrowHealthy’s “littles”, which is their brand for smaller buds, I have decided that this is the best $35 value for flower in Florida – though I haven’t been able to try RiSE yet, so I can’t speak on that.

The buds are actually bigger than some I have paid full price for. Silicon Valley OG seems to be a very sticky and resinous strain, with another near-perfect cure and resulting moisture content.

What strikes me as one of the most unique aspects of this strain, is that it seems to have a few lime green pistils mixed in with the orange ones. This provides a very pleasing aesthetic when contrasted with the light and medium greens in the bud itself. All are covered with a particularly heavy blanket of sparklingly clear and amber trichomes.

Very nicely done on this batch, GrowHealthy!

Appearance/Cure Rating: 8.00/10.00

Silicon Valley OG seems to be a more mild smelling strain upon first inspection. Light, subtly sweet floral notes are accented with hints of earthy pine. The whole profile comes together to make a smell that is reminiscent of a sweet, slightly earthy perfume.

However, it’s a different story when the buds are cracked open. A heavy, pungent and sour diesel funk emanates from the flower. This caught me off guard at first, as it’s such a contrast from the unbroken buds.

The taste when smokes resembles the smell of both the broken and unbroken buds: very floral-forward, with spicy and earthy notes upon exhale, that leaves a subtle sweetness on the tongue for the aftertaste.

Again, not a knockout in this category, but enjoyable. Though enjoyed the smell and flavor of Bubba Kush slightly more, I would consider them to be in about the same league in this category.

Smell/Taste Rating: 6.10/10.00

Effects/Medical Use

I find Silicon Valley OG to be a very cerebral indica for me – probably among the most stimulating indicas I’ve found. That’s what becomes immediately apparent after the first few hits: a very strong feeling behind the eyes and in the forehead, to the degree that it seems to shift my perception. As I mentioned earlier in the review, though I have a moderately high tolerance now, too many hits of this strain will cause my anxiety and paranoia to increase. I almost had a full blown panic attack after just one large bowl, so I’ve learned to take this one in moderation. When I do, the effects are nice. I find this to be good for stimulating creativity, but not the best for motivation. It’s still got enough indica effects that I find myself a little bit slower after medicating.

Body relaxation becomes apparent early on in the effects, and is moderate in intensity. I don’t find SVOG to be a couch-locking strain, but it has enough of a relaxation aspect for me to justify its indica label. As I write this review after medicating with a small bowl, I find the cerebral effects to still be the dominant ones after 20-30 minutes in. I do feel the “warm body” sensations that I seek from indica strains, but they seem to be more of a supporting act in favor of the sativa-like stimulation.

Also notable: 8 times out of 10, I got cotton mouth (dry mouth) from this strain. This is unusual for me when my tolerance is high. Appetite stimulation is not significant, however, and that tends to accompany the dry mouth for me. Very unique strain effects with this SVOG.

For me, I can use this strain at almost any time of day. Ironically, the only time I might not use it would be right before bed, and that’s due to the potent cerebral effects it brings.

I’ve seen some patients report that this is a good strain for them to sleep on, however, so don’t let this review stop you from trying SVOG. Everyone is unique!

Possibly good for treating:

  • Depression and related anxiety (in low doses)
  • Good for general relaxation (in low to moderate doses)
  • Relief of minor to moderate aches and pains
  • Relief of minor to moderate nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort
  • May stimulate creativity

I’m definitely no medical doctor, so please take the preceding conditions only as my own personal observations from using this strain and having experience with a multitude of different cannabis strains. Everybody is different, and every body reacts differently to various medications.

Effects Rating: 6.50/10.00

Overall Rating: 6.86/10.00

Overall, I would best describe Silicon Valley OG as a “good” indica strain from GrowHealthy.

Patients looking for a more functional or energetic indica strain may enjoy SVOG; however, others could find it to be sedating. I’d be interested to hear how this strain is affecting others – maybe I’m an outlier in this situation? Drop a comment and let us know how SVOG affects you, if you’ve tried it!

Many more reviews from the various MMTCs and other content are coming soon – especially as I find myself at home nearly 24/7 during this COVID-19 pandemic – so stay tuned!
