Bubba Kush is a well-known strain, popular for its heavy sedating indica effects that often leave users couch-locked or in a cannabis-induced nap.
My first experience with this strain was when I had GrowHealthy’s Bubba Kush distillate (review here) back in early 2019. To this day, it holds its place as one of my absolute favorite indica strains, and second only to the Eran Almog vape cart for helping me fall asleep and stay asleep.
The lineage of Bubba Kush is often debated. It is said to have originated in the 1990s by breeding an OG Kush descendant with an unknown plant that could have either Hindu Kush or Afghani lineage. GrowHealthy lists their genetics as Hindu Kush x OG Kush.

Appearance/Cure

These Bubba Kush “littles” were surprisingly fluffy, but still covered with trichomes. The buds are somewhat airy, and the trim was not on the same level as the other strains I recently picked up from GrowHealthy. It is slightly dry, but still manages to be a little bit sticky. While the other 3 strains (99 Problems, Blue Coffin, and Silicon Valley OG) really knocked it out of the park in this category, Bubba Kush didn’t seem to be on the same level here.
However, the flower is still good, as you can see in the images above. The soft buds are a medium green with purple accents, medium orange trichomes, and a generous dusting of golden trichomes. It grinds up well, and it smokes well. It checks all of the boxes; it just isn’t the same “phenomenal” cure I saw on the other strains. But, as the cliche goes: you can’t always hit a homerun.

Smell/Taste
I enjoyed the taste of Bubba Kush when I vaporized the distillate, and I find that I enjoy the smell and taste of the flower perhaps even more. The dominant smell/terpenes is equal parts coffee/chocolate and a slightly sweet fruit, with a faint hint of hash to bring everything together. Patients who enjoy musky, earthy indicas should find themselves with a favorable view of Bubba Kush’s terpene profile. This is a medium to moderate batch in terms of how pungent or loud it is.
The taste is both sweet and coffee or chocolate-like; it’s almost a bit candy-like, with an earthy and spicy finish on the exhale. In fact, I just took a hit, and it does leave an unmistakable coffeelike aftertaste for quite a while afterward.
I like this strain’s taste and smell – definitely in the upper end of the spectrum for me in this category.

Effects/Medical Use
Consistent with my experience when I tried the Bubba Kush distillate, the flower form of this strain still manages to hit me like a warm and cozy freight train. I can’t smoke this during the day, at least not if I plan on getting anything done. I mentioned that the Bubba Kush distillate was second only to Eran Almog flower in terms of sedation; as for the batches of flower that I have sampled from both strains, I would say the Bubba Kush is equal or better for heavy body relaxation and sedation.
Light doses of Bubba Kush will have me feeling heavy and moving slow, with a good chance of having me couchlocked within the first hour of medicating. The heavy body relaxation becomes apparent within minutes, and comes on strong for the duration of the effects, and sometimes long after. Patients with a low tolerance should plan to have time for a nap when first trying this strain – it’s that heavy.
Heavy doses of Bubba Kush usually put me to sleep within 1 to 2 hours, which is why I reserve this strain for evening use. As is my custom, however, I smoked a bowl before (and during) the writing process for this review. I must admit that I am having a hard time at both collecting my thoughts and keeping my head up – I am tending to space out and find myself in a daze at either the iMac monitor or my keyboard; this has happened a few times now.
Point being: It’s heavy. It’s Eran Almog-level heavy for me, so if you’ve tried that strain and found it to be sedating, then that may give you an idea of what to expect from Bubba Kush. Of course, every single strain affects every single person in a different way, so I don’t want to ever speak to you all in absolutes. But: It is worth a try, if you often find yourself in agreement with my recommendations.
Possibly good for treating:
- Insomnia
- Anxiety
- PTSD & related sleep issues
- Moderate aches and pains
- Moderate nausea/gastrointestinal issues
- Heavy Relaxation
I’m definitely no medical doctor, so please take the preceding conditions only as my own personal observations from using this strain and having experience with a multitude of different cannabis strains. Everybody is different, and every body reacts differently to various medications.
Effects Rating: 8.45/10.00
Overall Rating: 7.28/10.00
Overall, I would best describe Bubba Kush as a “good” indica strain from GrowHealthy.
Indica lovers or patients who enjoy heavy, sedating strains will most likely enjoy Bubba Kush. This is a strain that I will most likely try to keep in my rotation going forward, as it’s one of the best strains I have found for treating my insomnia symptoms when they flare up.
Many more reviews from the various MMTCs and other content are coming soon – especially as I find myself at home nearly 24/7 during this COVID-19 pandemic – so stay tuned!
