Trulieve TruShatter Review: Jack Herer (Sativa)

Trulieve has had a shatter product – their “TruShatter” – for well over a year now, having originally released it back in the fall of 2018. For those who are unaware of what exactly “shatter” is, it is a form of cannabis concentrate that is made with ethanol extraction; it produces a thin glasslike solid concentrate that “shatters” like glass when broken apart.

Though I’ve tried shatter in other legal states before, this was the first shatter product I purchased in Florida. In short, I think it matches or exceeds the quality of other shatter products I’ve tried. We’ll get into that in the full review here shortly.

As for the strain itself, Jack Herer is one of the most well-known cannabis strains of this era, named for the cannabis activist who also wrote the cannabis book “The Emperor Wears No Clothes”. Jack Herer is an energetic sativa strain that is perhaps best known for its focus and clarity when compared to other strains.

Terpenes

Unfortunately, terpene data were not available on the lab report for this product. I am not sure if this is Trulieve’s standard for shatter lab reports (not to test for terpenes), or if this was an outlier/one-time case of not including the terpenes. As always, terpene data will be updated and included in future reviews if/when available.

Appearance/Quality

This batch of Jack Herer shatter was comprised of one large, solid piece that weighed 1.1g. As far as shatter goes, the consistency is spot on; whenever I use the sharp end of a sab tool to break off a piece, the entire area around it shatters and cracks like glass – hence the name of the product. This means that one must be cautious when breaking off pieces for dabs, as some of the product can literally launch itself across the room when breaking off. The upside to this is that shatter is relatively easier to load into a dab pen; it falls straight onto the coil rather than trying to stick to the sides of the chamber, as has been my experience with rosin and other stickier concentrates.

The color, as pictured above, is a nice golden/amber color. This looks like a well-made, pure product (as far as shatter goes). This matches or exceeds the quality of shatter I have tried from other legal states in the past.

Appearance/Quality Rating: 4.00/5.00

Smell/Taste

Jack Herer is well known for its sharp, piney and citrus smell and taste – akin to walking through a pine forest. While the raw material of shatter itself is one of the weakest smelling concentrates, what smell I can detect is reminiscent of the flower form of the strain.

The taste when vaporized/dabbed is good, and consistent with the taste of the flower. However, I find that the citrus taste is more pronounced in the shatter (the pine smell/taste is more dominant in the flower form in my experience), and there is also a “creamy” taste that is present as well.

Some patients have recently complained on social media that their TruShatter has a harsh, chemical taste. I did not find that to be the case with this batch of Jack Herer shatter, but will be reviewing other shatter strains in the near future, so we will see! For now, though, this batch of shatter was a good representation of how the Jack Herer strain tastes, and I was pleased with it.

Smell/Taste Rating: 4.00/5.00

Effects/Medical Use

Jack Herer is one of my favorite sativa strains due to the focused, collected effects that it creates. The shatter form captures that very well, and I find this to be a great strain for morning & early afternoon medication. As I write this review after a few hits of the shatter in my concentrate pin, I find that words are flowing through my mind out to being typed on the keyboard very efficiently.

For me, Jack Herer is not a particularly racy or speedy sativa, despite the heightened focus and awareness it provides. Strains like Sour Diesel are more of the “run around and quickly power through a task list” type, while I find Jack Herer to be more of a “stay collected and focus on the details” type of strain, if that comparison makes sense.

I find all forms of Jack Herer to be excellent medication for morning and daytime use; for me, this is a good treatment for depression/negative thoughts and for ADD/focus-related issues.

Possibly good for treating:

  • Lack of energy/motivation
  • Depression
  • Lack of appetite
  • Minor headaches
  • Relief of minor skeletal/muscular aches and pains

I’m definitely no medical doctor, so please take the preceding conditions only as my own personal observations from using this strain and having experience with a multitude of different cannabis strains. Every body is different, and every body reacts different to various medications.

Effects Rating: 4.00/5.00

Overall Rating: 4.00/5.00

Overall, I would best describe this batch of Jack Herer shatter as a “high quality” product from Trulieve.

Though I typically prefer flower for my cannabis medication, I was pleased with my experience with this Jack Herer shatter, and will definitely have to try other strains in the future now.

For patients who like the Jack Herer strain, or for patients who enjoy using different forms of concentrates, I’d definitely recommend this product. Hopefully, the $60 price tag will decrease in 2020 to closer match the price of shatter in other legal states, as production and availability continue to increase throughout the Florida medical cannabis industry.
