Originally released in flower form in late 2019, Skunk Ape is one of the newest strains available at Trulieve. There isn’t a whole lot of information about this strain online at this point.
I’ve found Skunk Ape to be midly couch-locking/sedating in terms of its effects. This flower, for me, was a classic example of THC percentage not being the most important factor in determining how potent the effects will be. I find this Skunk Ape to have strong effects despite the fact that it has less than 16% THC.

Appearance/Cure

Trulieve really did a great job growing and curing this batch of Skunk Ape. Purple Kush varieties are often known to be grown for their deep purple color, and the Las Vegas Purple Kush parent of this strain must have really come through in this particular phenotype. The rich purple tones are also visibly covered in a blanket of dusty amber and clear crystal trichomes.
The moisture content of this batch is nearly perfect, and the buds are sticky with medium density. This eighth of Skunk Ape is yet another example of Trulieve at some of their best growing and curing. I expect to see this quality improve even further as we head into 2020.
Appearance/Cure Rating: 7.00/10.00
Smell/Taste
Despite having “skunk” in its name, Skunk Ape is a fairly mild smelling strain, with sweet and hashy smells being the dominant ones. This strain reminds me of other hashy smelling strains such as LA Confidential and Gorilla Grapes, although this particular batch did not have as powerful of a smell as my experience with those strains. There is also a subtle musky/skunky smell lingering in the background.
When smoked, the sweet terpenes seem to be dominant in the taste of Skunk Ape. Though this is not necessarily a standout strain in this category, it is enjoyable.
Smell/Taste Rating: 5.60/10.00
Effects/Medical Use
I find Skunk Ape to be a mild to moderate indica strain in terms of how sedating its effects are. At first, uplifting cerebral effects are most noticeable – I found video games to be my activity of choice after medicating with this strain. After a half hour and beyond, the effects shift to heavy body sensations, which can induce a bit of a couch lock.
Skunk Ape, in my experience, is best for late afternoon and evening use. This is not really a go-to strain for insomnia in my opinion, but more of a choice for relaxation at the end of a productive day. Again, though this is not really a standout strain, it is enjoyable and relaxing.
Possibly good for treating:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Minor aches and pains
- General relaxation
- Mild gastrointestinal discomfort (Irritable Bowel Syndrome or other similar conditions)
I’m definitely no medical doctor, so please take the preceding conditions only as my own personal observations from using this strain and having experience with a multitude of different cannabis strains. Every body is different, and every body reacts different to various medications.
Effects Rating: 6.00/10.00
Overall Rating: 6.20/10.00
Overall, I would best describe Skunk Ape as a “pretty good” indica strain from Trulieve.
$43 seems to be a fair price for this strain, and it would be a really great value at $35 or below. Though this is not exactly a strain I’ll go out of my way to get in the future, I certainly don’t mind keeping it in my rotation, as its relaxing qualities are enjoyable. For patients looking for a mildly potent and relaxing strain – but one that still packs a bit of a bunch – Skunk Ape is a good choice. I’m thankful for the expanding variety of strains we have in Florida, and expect it to continue growing significantly in 2020. With that being said, I’m happy to have Skunk Ape in the Florida strain library.
