Banana Kush first became at Trulieve in mid-2018 when flower vape cups were the only way to get cannabis flower in Florida. It’s been available a handful of times since then, once or twice of which were in full flower form.
Banana Kush is an indica-dominant hybrid with both uplifting and relaxing effects, that seems to have a heavier comedown than most hybrid strains.

Appearance/Cure

Banana Kush buds are medium green, covered in golden trichomes and pinkish-orange pistils.
This batch of Banana Kush got a fair amount of criticism on social media, but I must have been lucky, as my eighth has a nice cure. It isn’t the best I’ve seen from Trulieve by any means, but it isn’t terrible at all. The buds are a bit airy and longer/skinny, but I wonder if this has to do with the genetics of the plant rather than any part of the growing or curing process. They are still fairly sticky, and the moisture content is nearly perfect.
The one critique I have of this batch is that it had a fair amount of small stems that could have easily been clipped, and a fair amount of sugar leaves left behind as well. At $53/eighth, I expect a to see a premium medical cannabis product in all areas, and I have seen better results from Trulieve flower at a lower price point. The trim seemed to be the weak point on this batch from my experience.
With all that being said, this is good flower with a good cure – nothing to be overly critical about.

Smell/Taste
I tend to expect strains with specific names like Banana Kush to smell like their namesake. While Banana Kush does have a fruity smell, especially when broken apart or ground up, bananas were not the first fruit that came to mind. I’d have to say there is more of an overall tropical/tree fruit smell, and a bit of both earthy and diesel/chemical terpenes present as well. I found the fruit terpenes to be the dominant ones overall.
When broken open, there was a hint of a banana-like smell, but I really had to look for it – so it may or may not have really been there. Maybe it’s just this cut or even this batch of Banana Kush, but I don’t think that’s what I would have named this strain based on its smell or taste.
The earthy and fuel terpenes seem to be more dominant in the taste of Banana Kush when smoked. It’s a pretty good smelling flower, but not a standout for me.

Effects/Medical Use
Banana Kush definitely presented more indica-type effects for me when smoked. A calm cerebral invigoration and a relaxed body sensation both become apparent just a minute or two after the first inhalation. I really feel this strain behind the eyes, and it makes my eyes bloodshot as well (not a negative factor for me, since I use this strain at night.)
About 20-30 minutes in, I really begin to feel a heavy and couch-locked sensation that I imagine would be useful in treating pain, cramps, etc. However, Banana Kush was also uplifting in the sense that it made my depressive and negative thought patterns lift, and be replaced with a more content/”in the moment” relaxation. I enjoyed cooking while under the effects of this strain.
Banana kush is described as a 60/40 indica-dominant hybrid, and I’d generally agree with that assessment, or even say it’s slightly more indica-dominant. It’s on the borderline of being sedating, especially in higher doses. I generally wouldn’t choose to medicate with this early in the day, especially if I had a lot of things to get done.
Patients who enjoy heavier strains and indica-dominant hybrids will enjoy Trulieve’s cut of Banana Kush. With its ability to uplift the mood and simultaneously relax the body, I will certainly be looking to try this strain in other products in the future.
Possibly good for treating:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Mild to moderate aches and pains
- Mild to moderate nausea/gastrointestinal issues
- General Relaxation
- Insomnia (especially in higher doses)
I’m definitely no medical doctor, so please take the preceding conditions only as my own personal observations from using this strain and having experience with a multitude of different cannabis strains. Every body is different, and every body reacts different to various medications.
Effects Rating: 6.00/10.00
Overall Rating: 5.20/10.00
Overall, I would best describe Banana Kush as an “average” hybrid strain from Trulieve.
Though I’m not sure I agree with the $53/eighth price tag for this particular batch of Banana Kush, it was overall a good quality product that I would probably purchase again, especially if it were a $43 (or lower priced) stain. However, I really did enjoy the heavy effects I experienced from this strain; for that reason, I’d be interested in trying this product in concentrate form – most likely crumble or rosin.
