Trulieve TruFlower Review: Mandarin Dreams (Indica)

Mandarin Dreams has been a strain that Trulieve has brought into its rotation more than a few times in the past year. In fact, it was actually the very first TruFlower strain I purchased – in the ceramic vape pods back then (September 2018).

Interestingly, Mandarin Dreams is listed as an indica strain at Trulieve, though almost every other source lists it as a hybrid strain. I’ve found that the effects lean more to a hybrid, with a bit of an indica finish.

Quick Facts:

Mandarin Dreams is another visually appealing strain, and the fact that the eighth I purchased was comprised of large, chunky buds was icing on the cake for the overall aesthetic.

Colors range from medium to lime green, and are all covered in burnt orange pistils and sparkling trichomes.

This cure is excellent, with (again) nearly perfect moisture content; the buds themselves are dense and sticky when broken down.

The trim job was better than others I have seen recently, but there were still a couple of sugar leaves left behind. This never really negatively impacts my overall experience when medicating, but I find it a sign of attention to detail when the trim job is immaculate.

Appearance/Cure Rating: 7.20/10.00

Mandarin Dreams most definitely lives up to its name in terms of its smell/terpene profile. When I first opened the jar, I immediately noticed a sour citrus smell with an underlying earthy musk; in all honesty, it smells like very good musky cannabis flower with a piece of tangerine peel left inside the jar. It’s unique, and for my personal taste, very enjoyable.

There are also subtle hints of more sweet/tropical notes, particularly if you choose to vaporize this strain as opposed to smoking it.

After trying more than one “Lemon” strain that didn’t necessarily smell like lemons, I appreciate a “Mandarin” strain that does smell like orange citrus. Nice genetics for smell/taste on this strain!

Smell/Taste Rating: 6.70/10.00

Effects/Medical Use

Though listed as an Indica strain, I found Mandarin Dreams to perform much more like a hybrid, and not necessarily an indica-heavy hybrid at that.

In fact, powerful cerebral effects are what I first notice each time I medicate with this strain. For me, this was an uplifting, happy, “giggly” strain – great for knocking out some persistent symptoms of depression that I have been facing for the past couple of months. I didn’t personally experience anxiety from these cerebral effects, however, nor did I feel particularly energized. “Content” is a good descriptor.

Not long after the cerebral effects set in, a subtle body warmth/buzz starts to become noticeable in the background, and continues with nearly that same intensity for the duration of the effects. This never really settles into the full-on “couch lock” or sleepy effects that many patients search for with indica strains, so if you’re looking for something to put you to sleep, strains like 9lb Hammer or Duct Tape may be better choices.

However, if you’re looking for a good, “happy” strain the provides a nice side of relaxation without being neither too energizing or sedating, then Mandarin Dreams is an excellent choice.

Possibly good for treating:

  • Depression and related anxiety
  • Good for general relaxation
  • Relief of minor to moderate aches and pains
  • Relief of minor to moderate nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort
  • I found this strain to be a good appetite stimulant

I’m definitely no medical doctor, so please take the preceding conditions only as my own personal observations from using this strain and having experience with a multitude of different cannabis strains. Every body is different, and every body reacts different to various medications.

Effects Rating: 6.00/10.00

Overall Rating: 6.63/10.00

Overall, I would best describe Mandarin Stream as a “good” indica strain from Trulieve.

At $43/eighth, I would definitely consider purchasing this strain again in the future. I find it to be a good “light” indica option: not a strain that is going to render me unable to function, but heavy enough to enjoy the evening after a long day at work.

If nothing else, I would give this strain a try for its unique terpene profile. Of the many strains I’ve tried, I haven’t found any others that smell like orange citrus in the same way that Mandarin Dreams does. Definitely a unique strain, worthy of at least one purchase.

  1. I agree with your review on this particular strain, it works more like a sativa dominant hybrid for me. As far as smell and flavor, it’s not as prominent of a smell as I expected, thought it would have more citrus flavor, but the initial flavor is very nice whether vaped, smoked or eaten with very nice after taste that do not have the chlorophyll taste that some green can have. I like to chew a little nugget every now and then.
Keep up the good work, looking forward to reading future reviews.

  2. I was considering this strain, but the low terpene contents(1.33%) looks like an overcure or storage issue, it should be 2% at least. Some strains can have 5% terpenes, properly cured, but if you dry too quickly, you will lose the volatile terpenes a lot faster. And because the monoterpenes that give this strain the smell(myrcene, limonene, ocimene) and much of the entourage effect happen to be the terpenes that evaporate most quickly, I’m going to take a pass. Storing these in plastic is another mistake as the plastic will absorb some terpenes causing faster losses from the flower in storage. I credit trulieve for its nice strain selection, and for the grow quality(when you do get something fresh and properly cured, it is top shelf). This was a nice review especially as the terpene profile was presented(kudos!). Cannabis reviews without profiles are pretty much worthless as many strains have differrenc chemotypes with dramatically different effects. In summation, the curing at trulieve(florida) is very spotty IMO. With a careful cure this strain should have had 3% terpenes, and it should have been stored in glass to preserve that for the customer. Thanks for the review, I got all the information I wanted. Its a strain with a lot of low boiling terpenes so it wont keep long here in plastic.

    1. Glad the review helped. Happy strain hunting!
