Trulieve TruFlower Review: Sour Diesel (Sativa)

I’ve been waiting quite a while to be able to catch Trulieve’s smokable Sour Diesel flower in stock. This strain really doesn’t need an introduction for most cannabis consumers; Sour Diesel is arguably one of the most popular strains of all time, claiming its fame a couple of decades ago in the early ’90s.

Before the passage of SB182 and the subsequent legalization of full smokable cannabis flower in Florida, Sour Diesel was a common strain available in Trulieve’s ceramic flower vape cups (review of Sour Diesel vape cups here). The strain seemed to all but disappear from Trulieve’s flower offerings thereafter, until a few weeks ago, when the first batches of Sour Diesel flower appeared – almost a full 3 month after the passage of SB 182.

Sour Diesel is one of my favorite sativa strains of all time. This strain consistently obliterates my depression and allows me to get into a motivated, productive, and happy state of mind.

Appearance/Cure

Opening up this jar of Sour Diesel and taking a look at the flower took me back to the old days of using tiny flathead screwdrivers to work the metal screens off of the old vape cups. This flower looks almost exactly like I remember its counterpart in the vape cups, down to the distinct shade of green that Trulieve’s cut of Sour Diesel seems to have.

I purchased two eighths, and found that both were filled up with popcorn nugs. Popcorn nugs don’t typically bother me, as they ultimately work the same way when medicating, but I do prefer to see large, beautiful buds when rating the appearance and cure.

The flower itself is sticky and seems to be cured well, though whoever trimmed this batch seemed to miss a bunch of dark green sugar leaves.

After seeing Sour Diesel from other MMTCs, I do think this batch could have had better presentation, but it certainly wasn’t bad or even below average.

Appearance Rating: 6.40/10.00

Smell/Taste

I found this batch of Sour Diesel to have a slightly different terpene profile than what I typically encounter with this strain. The sour, musky, earthy, and citrus terpenes are all there; however, the characteristic “diesel” smell seems to be lacking in this batch.

I’ve tried quite a few cuts and batches of various Sour Diesel products since joining the Florida registry. Most all of them, including earlier flower vape cup batches from Trulieve, had that loud, pungent, gasoline smell that makes Sour Diesel such a standout strain. That seemed to be completely absent in this batch, save for a small hint lurking below the other terpenes.

When vaped, I found this batch to have an almost sweet/sour citrus taste, that was very enjoyable – just not what I’m typically accustomed to with Sour Diesel. Since every MMTC surely has a slightly different genetic variant of each strain, I suppose this is to be expected; a host of other environmental factors can affect the final product of a grow as well.

I do hope that future batches have more of that pungent “gas” smell, if nothing else for my enjoyment of the novelty.

Smell/Taste Rating: 6.50/10.00

Effects/Medical Use

While it may have differed slightly from past batches in other categories, there’s one thing I have found is always consistent with Trulieve’s Sour Diesel flower: it is the most energizing sativa I have found in Florida.

This is one of the few strains that seriously feels like drinking a cup of coffee for me, making it my first choice for early morning medication. Cerebral effects are apparent almost as soon as the first exhale is finished, bringing on a wave of motivation and energy that can be useful for powering through almost any “to do” list.

For patients who are prone to getting anxiety from sativa strains or the effects of THC in general, I recommend being extra cautious with this strain. The classic advice for new patients is to “start low and go slow”; if you normally don’t heed those words, I advise that using this strain be the one time you do. It’s potent.

Experienced patients will find the powerful sativa effects enjoyable and invigorating, and will be able to harness the strain’s energy to get through the day and any tasks at hand.

Sour Diesel is one of my favorite strains for treating my depression; I attribute some of this to the fact that it helps keep me busy and my thoughts productive, rather than sitting and getting lost in introspection. On that note, I would say that in my year of being a Florida cannabis patient, this is the best strain I’ve found for treating my depression.

Possibly good for treating:

  • Depression and related anxiety
  • ADD/ADHD or focus-related issues
  • Lack of motivation
  • Improves concentration and memory recall
  • Increases energy/alertness, in a way almost similar to caffeine

I’m definitely no medical doctor, so please take the preceding conditions only as my own personal observations from using this strain and having experience with a multitude of different cannabis strains. Every body is different, and every body reacts different to various medications.

Effects Rating: 7.60/10.00

Overall Rating: 6.83/10.00

Overall, I would best describe Sour Diesel as a “good” strain.

Though I have seen better cures from Trulieve, they still did a great job with this batch, and it definitely got the job done from a medical perspective.

At $33/eighth, this is one of the most affordable flower strains in Florida, and I absolutely would recommend it to anyone looking to treat any of the conditions (or similar ones) listed above. As I mentioned before – be cautious if it’s your first time trying Sour Diesel, especially Trulieve’s cut. I associate this strain with energy and focus, and one of the most pure or “true” sativa strains available in Florida.
