Trulieve Flower Review: 9lb Hammer (Indica)

9lb Hammer has been one of Trulieve’s staple strains since the very beginning of the Florida medical marijuana program. I first tried it in a vape cart, then in Truclear distillate, and as flower in the ceramic cups. 9lb Hammer was notably absent from Trulieve’s initial rollout of smokable flower, but it made its appearance as their 5th smokable flower strain last week.

As 9lb Hammer has always been a go-to indica strain for me, I definitely didn’t mind getting it again and seeing what it’s intended to look like as flower. Again, 9lb Hammer proves itself as a highly valuable medicinal strain.

Appearance/Cure

The first batch of 9lb Hammer flower I got (in December 2018) were a vibrant, almost bright shade of green. This batch is actually a few shades darker than the first batch I got, and though it has less total cannabinoid percentages, it is much more covered in trichomes than the first batch I received.

The eighth I got was made up of over a dozen small, dense buds. There was no shake, no seeds, and no small stems other than the thicker stems inside the buds themselves.

This batch of 9b Hammer was a bit dry, similar to the batch I got in late 2018. Again, it wasn’t dried to the point that it crumbled when handled, but it was extremely easy to break down. I believe Trulieve will continue to refine their curing process, and the quality will continue to improve as we move forward.

Smell/Taste

This batch of 9lb hammer had a pleasant and unique smell: earthy and pungent with a hint of limey citrus terpenes. The earthy terpenes are definitely the dominant ones; however, it is worth nothing that this batch had much more of the limey citrus smell present. This eighth honestly smells pretty close to an earthy version of Sprite soda, and tastes even more like it when smoked.

Due to the slight variation in color and terpene makeup, it seems that this batch is a slightly different phenotype of 9lb Hammer than the first batch I picked up. The effects seem to be a bit heavier, as well. Overall, this is another quality cure that could be even better by not drying it as much.

Effects/Medical Use

I always enjoy the effects of 9lb Hammer. It’s definitely a heavier indica, and there’s almost no notable cerebral stimulation with this strain. The first effects have an onset almost immediately after smoking or vaporizing the flower; a warm sensation blankets the body and helps ease away any aches or pains. 9lb Hammer also does a solid job of alleviating my anxiety, and helping me to relax and enjoy whatever activity I’m doing at the time. This is a great strain for relief of insomnia, particularly in high doses.

I wouldn’t recommend this strain for daytime medication, at least not if you plan on getting anything done. 9lb Hammer will most likely result in the patient having to take a nap if used in high doses during the day. My favorite way to use this strain is to wind down during the later evening hours. I find it enjoyable for watching TV and playing video games during the final few hours of the day. After smoking a few bowls, it almost always leads to getting the munchies; after I’ve finished eating, my eyes and head are usually getting too heavy to be able to stay awake.

Continuing the theme of variance between this batch and the last one I got, the effects of this batch seem to be a little heavier and more indica-leaning. If I had to put a number to it, I would say this is an 85/15% indica-dominant strain. It’s a staple in my nighttime medication regimen, and I’ll definitely buy it again in the future.

Possibly good for treating:

  • Good for relaxation
  • Relief of moderate skeletal/muscular aches and pains
  • Relief of minor to moderate nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort
  • Insomnia
  • Lack of appetite
  • Anxiety
  • Headaches

Rating: 7.70/10.00

Overall Rating: 6.73/10.00

I would best describe this batch of 9lb Hammer as “good”.

Every single 9lb Hammer product I’ve purchased has consistently been a great example of beneficial medicinal effects from an indica strain. If you like indica cannabis strains, you absolutely have to try this one out. It’s definitely in my top 3 favorite indica strains, and most likely will be for a long while to come.
