Trulieve Flower Review: Dutch Hawaiian (Sativa)

Dutch Hawaiian is a strain that I had never heard of until it recently became available on Trulieve’s website. As I personally prefer sativa strains (I primarily use cannabis to treat depression and anxiety), I always find myself going to pick up every sativa that becomes available. In this instance, it paid off very nicely – Dutch Hawaiian is one of the most unique sativa strains I’ve yet to try in Florida’s program; with well-rounded and balanced cerebral and body effects, a unique smell, and a beautiful appearance, this strain could become widely popular this year should Trulieve choose to keep it around.

Quick Facts:

Appearance/Feel

Dutch Hawaiian is described on Leafly as being
“lime green in color”. This is an understatement – this stuff glows, as you see in the picture above. I actually double checked my phone before posting the above image to Reddit to make sure that I hadn’t accidentally applied a filter (I didn’t) – that is how bright green/gold this flower is. In my opinion, it is beautiful. There are fuzzy orange pistils and clear/off-white trichomes covering the flower, making for a bright display of colors. As far as moisture/curing, this batch seemed to be a bit on the dry side, but not so much that it all became a crumbly, shaky mess when handled. If it had just a bit more moisture, I would consider this flower to be nearly perfect in this category.

Appearance Rating: 4.10/5.00

Smell/Taste

Dutch Hawaiian may be the most unique-smelling sativa I have gotten my hands on. While other sativas like Jack Herer, Super Silver Haze, and even Sour Diesel have at least some similar qualities in the way they smell, Dutch Hawaiian seems to smell more like Sunset Sherbert, Crescendo, and other “heavy”-smelling indica and hybrid strains. There’s a sweet and sugary scent that seems to predominate this strain; the best way I can describe it is to say that it smells like warm sugar cookies. There are more subtle notes of skunky fruit; this all comes together to create a heavy “musk” that makes Dutch Hawaiian the unique sativa that it is in this category. When vaporized, the sweet and sugary cookie taste is dominant on inhale, and a subtle sweet/sour hint of tropical fruit is evident in the background.

Smell/Taste Rating: 4.00/5.00

Effects/Medical Use

Being that I use cannabis to treat depression, anxiety, ADD, and mild PTSD, I rate the effects from this perspective. Any strain that makes me feel happy, productive, and focused is a winner for me. As many of us know, sativas have an unfortunate tendency to induce paranoia and anxiety in high doses; these are the strains that are more likely to make us feel like our heart is beating out of our chest. In that regard, Dutch Hawaiian is a smooth balance of cerebral and body effects, similar to Colombian Gold, but perhaps even on the more relaxing side of the spectrum. It does not make me feel sleepy in the slightest; I am alert, focused, but my body also has a warm and relaxed sensation that is more typical of hybrid and indica strains. This strain has been one of the best strains for inciting creativity; I definitely noticed this effect prominently the first couple of times I medicated with Dutch Hawaiian. It’s one of my favorites, and though I feel I say that about almost every new sativa strain I try, I can almost guarantee that patients looking to treat similar mental ailments as mine will find that Dutch Hawaiian does an excellent job of healing those symptoms while keeping us relaxed enough to prevent unpleasant side effects.

Possibly good for treating:

  • Depression and related anxiety
  • ADD/ADHD or focus-related issues
  • Good for treating lack of motivation
  • Minor aches and pains
  • Minor nausea/gastrointestinal issues

I’m definitely no medical doctor, so please take the preceding conditions only as my own personal observations from using this strain and having experience with a multitude of different cannabis strains. Every body is different, and every body reacts different to various medications.

Effects Rating: 4.50/5.00

Overall Rating: 4.20/5.00

Overall, I would best describe Dutch Hawaiian as a “uniquely excellent” sativa strain.

Sativa connoisseurs, don’t pass this one up. It is different from any other sativa strain I’ve tried so far, in a great way. Dutch Hawaiian is a strain that could really be great for use during any time of the day, but as sativa strains go, this one may not be best late at night or before trying to sleep. However, it does not at all make me feel speedy or racy, so perhaps it isn’t a bad choice for night time medication either. You guys will have to let me know. Enjoy!

  1. Do you sell herb, or is it just CBD oil?

    1. I personally don’t sell any products – I review them and also create content based around discussion of current events in the Florida cannabis industry. Most all Florida dispensaries sell both CBD and THC oils, tinctures, concentrates, and more. 3 of our dispensaries provide actual flower (herb, bud, etc.) – those are Trulieve, Curaleaf, and Altmed (MUV).

  3. Hey! Your content has been amazing for me. I am a new medical marijuana patient and have been trying to navigate the best product for myself (not a fan of what was recommended to me!). I was wondering how you would compare this Trulieve Dutch Hawaiian with Fluent Subra (Sour Diesel) or Fluent Atlas (Durban Poison). Aside from my insomnia, I’m looking for something to help my depression and ADD/ADHD. Would love to hear what you think!

    1. Hello; thanks for the compliments!

For me, Dutch Hawaiian was more mellow than those 2. Still did well for my depression. But not as energetic.

      Hope this helps!

    2. I think both of the latter strains you mentioned from Fluent, are better for your symptoms. They work better for mine. Trulieve Dutch Hawaiian is more of a relaxing, chill sativa.

Atlas was probably the most speedy one of all that you listed.

      Hope this helps!
